Needle Felting Tools You Need to Know About…Part 3

By Jodi Boylan

It’s time for the giveaway you were waiting for!  But first let me tell you about the Needle Felting Mat! Make sure to read through to find out how you can enter to win a few prizes.

Needle Felting Mat:

I was thrilled to test and review this item! I typically use a foam mat when needle felting. Foam mats breakdown over time and with use. This can cause pieces of foam to get into your work that can then take time to clean out. I was immediately drawn to the idea of bristles instead of the foam. That would offer a firm working surface and a less messy one. And that it did! The first thing I noticed while using the mat was that it offers less resistance on the needle when felting due to the needle going through the bristles and not into the foam. The next thing I noticed was I typically roll my wool while shaping and felting in the early stages of a creation. The bristles did not allow me to roll as easy, so I was picking my project up more. The wool fibers stick the bristles pulling them out of the project some. Therefore I would recommend using this mat in the beginning stages of your sculpture. When adding details or final colors be careful to not put too much pressure on the wool into the bristles. I thoroughly enjoyed not having any foam pieces to mess with while making the mushroom. Needle Felting Mats are a must have for any needle felting project! This should be on your list of items to purchase if you are beginning felting.  This mat has other uses as well and you can see me use it in future reviews.

  2. I love needle felting. For those who are just starting, an easy way to make Christmas ornaments is to use cookie cutters as a form.
